Canon | Energy of the City

Canon | Energy of The City

Canon came to The Washington Post's WP Brand Studio and wanted to tell an aspirations story to promote their new point-and-shoot camera. Canon wanted to feature a photographer to showcase that photographer’s tips for creating great photos.

Lame, I know right.

So, I pitched Canon a new multimedia story featuring Ryan, a uniquely talented 18-year-old photographer. My approach focused on showcasing his genius and creative process, creating a more inspirational narrative. This story highlighted not just how the camera works but how creativity unfolds, demonstrating how Canon unlocks creative freedom.

STORYTELLING AND MULTIMEDIA

This story follows Ryan - an 18 year old professional photographer - as he runs around New York City dodging traffic, climbing buildings, and risking it all for the perfect photo. Ryan takes us around his world.

We wake up with him on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, climbing to the top of the building he lives in to capture the dusk of NYC. Next, we see Ryan battle the chaos of Midtown Manhattan, running between cars and jetting up avenues, snapping photos along the way. Lastly, we see Ryan in his own environment at a skate park located under the Brooklyn Bridge where he meets friends, skates and captures some candid photos of his skate scene.

ONBOARDING PATIENTS

Ryan's Photos And Personal Story Is Brought To Life With A Narrative Article That Runs Down The Left Side Of The Page, Interactive Maps To Track Our Story, Supplementary Social Posts, Video And Audio Clips From Friends And Family.

As readers scroll down the page, the article on the left of the page scrolls while content on the right is pinned to the screen. The reader gets to experience Ryan’s day through the changing content on the right — from carousels of him images, video of him running around the streets of New York snapping photos, interviews with him, interactive maps to show his photo locations and more.

Woven through the article on the right side of the screen are little interactive supplemental story telling elements, like bringing Ryans instagram onto the page, or featuring audio clips from interviews with his friends and family.

Feeling Alive

To bring our Photographer's photos to life, a hover effect was added to the images. Interacting and hovering on the images would create a wobble effect to match the energy of the photos and the day.
